    Which size is your dog?

    Coats are sized by back length, not by breed or weight. Thirty seconds with a tape measure is the difference between a coat that fits and a return.

    Questions about fit

    Which size does my dog need?

    Measure the back length, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and match it to the size chart or let the calculator above do it.

    • L 48 to 58 cm
    • XL 58 to 70 cm

    On the line between two sizes, take the larger one.

    My dog is deep-chested. Does that change things?

    It can. Add the chest measurement, around the widest part just behind the front legs, to the calculator. If the chest is bigger than the size built on back length allows, it recommends the next size up.

    Do the coats go over a harness?

    The walking coats and the rain jacket have an opening on the back for the lead, so the harness goes on underneath.

    What if it does not fit?

    Send it back unworn, with the tags on, within 30 days and we swap the size or refund it.

    How Tarnhound sizing works

    A dog coat is only any good if it stays put on a wet hill and lets your dog move. Every Tarnhound coat and jumper is cut to back length, measured from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, because that is the measurement that decides whether a coat covers the back or rides up it.

    Why not breed or weight?

    Two spaniels can be a size apart, and a lean whippet and a stocky terrier can weigh the same and need completely different coats. Breed is a good first guess, which is why the calculator suggests one. The tape measure decides.

    On the line between two sizes

    Take the larger size. A coat that is a little long still covers the back; one that is a little short leaves the kidneys bare, which is the part a coat is for.

    Chest and neck

    If your dog is deep in the chest for its length, add the chest measurement to the calculator and it will size up when it needs to. Collars are sized by neck, and each product page says how.

    Getting a dog used to a coat

    Put it on indoors for a minute, with a treat, and take it off again. Do that a few times before the first walk in it. Most dogs stop minding within a day or two, and a coat that goes on without a wrestle gets worn.
